Question:

Why doesn't the CFL move into Detroit?

Detroit is ready and ripe for a CFL expansion team. Detroit has extra stadium facilities (old tiger stadium/pontiac silverdome), a faltering NFL team, and a huge resource of football talent coming surronding post secondary Michigan schools, and Ontario Schools. People in Michigan are already familiar with the CFL, and most importantly the former USFL team was a success in Michigan prior, showing local fans have an interested in "off season" football. Furthermore, Detroit area is heavily populated by both Canadians and Americans within a 2 hour drive.

  1. sounds good to me, they should add one to Buffalo as well.

  2. It could work, but it would have to be a team based in Windsor, only using Detroit for selected games

  3. The CFL tried putting teams in the US.  Hopefully the league learned their lesson.  They need a team in the maritime provinces before they try something stupid like going back to the US.

  4. In 1993, the CFL expanded in the USA with teams in Sacramento, Las Vegas, Shreveport, Birmingham, Memphis and Baltimore.  The plan was to move up to 10 canadian teams and 10 american teams.  The bid was not successfull...  Attendance were low and fans kept comparing the game to the NFL's.  Detroit has too much of a tradition for it to fall for the CFL.  And the football market seems to be crowded with the Lions, great college teams (GO Wolverines !), the Argos in Toronto and the Ti-cats in Hamilton...

  5. well because it's the Canadian football league, and Detroit is in america.

  6. Actaully that does not really sound that dumb also look at other cities close to the border

  7. CFL tried US expansion and other than maybe Baltimore it was a failure. Old Tiger Stadium is not good at all for sports anymore. Silverdome is probably still usable, yes.

    It's an interesting theory, though.

  8. The city rots, for one thing.

  9. been there, done that, doesnt work. the CFL is great because it isnt americanized with high salaries and 100,000 seat stadiums. before they even think of going elsewhere, they need a team in halifax. im glad americans are taking interest in the canadian game. after all, in the CFL: we have bigger balls. anyway u have ur lions, take a trip up to hamilton or toronto for your cfl fix.

  10. Been there, done that, didn't work.  USA is NFL.  Prime example was Baltimore.  Awesome football team, Grey Cup Champs, oodles of fan support.  Then came the Ravens.  It took the Stallions about 10 minutes to pack up and head to Montreal, taking down the rest of the american teams with them.  Any city currently with an NFL team will not support it and the logistics of including smaller cities is pre-emptive.  A wonderful idea in theory, without legs in reality.

  11. Awsome idea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Your smart!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. That is a wicked idea and I hope they look at it.

I have always thought CFL did well in USA and should expand there again.

We need the teams, the exposure, and the fans.

    Sweet idea.
