  1. They are not in Europe

  2. Being partly in Asia isn't whats stopping them. Turkey is 97% in Asia, but the 3% in Europe makes them elegible members. Armenia is 100% in Asia, but they're culturally European so they could join.

There were originally talks about this, but its considered that theres no chance of it happening now. No-one wants it to happen. They're not involved in the European Neighbourhood Policy, because they see themselves as an equal partner with the EU, not a junior member of the ENP. There are four spaces where the EU and Russia have agreed to cooperate.

Russia is a huge, wealthy (for the few) country, which, with Arctic shipping lanes and increased food production in Siberia, is set to be a net benefactor of Global Warming. If it can solve its problems, it'll certainly regain its superpower status (or if USA, EU, China, and India remain/increase they're influence, a Great Power.)

  3. EU countries are predominantly democratic countries while Russia is a communist country.  Thus, there could be a mjor difference in the system which is the main reason why Russia is not admitted to EU.

  4. The Ruble is not nearly stable enough to warrant admission to the EU by that means. Russia is basically Europes Mexico (only they have oil there). Russia is way too corrupt and has a weak infrastructure to move goods throughout Russia, into the EU.  They are squabbling over the price and consistency of oil flowing from Russia into the EU.  Oh, and Lithuania, Estonia, and Latvia hate Russia.  Shall I continue down the list?

  5. Only part of Russia is in Europe.  The rest is actually in Asia.  Also, Russia may want to cut off integration so it would possible be a monkey wrench to certain agendas.

  6. They don't want to bring down thier economy.

  7. Russians are wannabe Europeans. And with a really weak economy they could hurt the rest of the Union.
