Why doesn't the US government just do this:

Question

Stop mucking around in foreign adventures like Iraq

Stop buying foreign oil

Have the courage to raise MPG standards to 35 average.

Make SUVs illegal

Bring every manufacturing job back to the US, away from China

Stop increasing the national debt

Begin paying off the national debt

Begin to address the infrastructure decay in the US, bridges, etc

Build fifty new nuclear generating plants in the Great Plains

Build 50,000 windfarms in the Great Plains

Imprison any public official who takes money from a lobbyist

Make the presidential term ONE term of six years

Make congressional limits after 8 years

Abolish all corporate health care operations

Why not?

Because that kind of radical thinking is what got this country started in the first place. And now that there are people with power here, they won't dare consider doing anything that might jeopardize their hold on power.

Same old story, I'm afraid, and Rome isn't quite ready to fall just yet. Give it another 40-50 years.

hey man you might want to check your attitude, people like you are the reason for partisan gridlock, as for the points you made sh*t happens and now we are in iraq, we have no time machine so we must finish and then leave, i agree we need to reduce foreign oil dependency to where its non existent but that will take a little time, i also agree we should try and stop the national debt before it gets any higher but again sometimes sh*t happens, we need to bring manufacturing jobs back home, we cant make SUV's illegal because that would be illegal this is America after all, we cant all agree that nuclear energy is the answer, though i would be open to windfarms, imprisonment for taking money from lobbyists is extreme but if caught they should be barred from government employ, we should start to fix infastructure, i agree that congressional limits should be 8 years (great idea btw), i disagree with your presidential term idea

Stop buying foreign oil?  Because everything depends on oil right now, so there needs to be an alternative for it. Not just for normal cars, but large trucks, jets, bus, plastic products, rubber products, etc.  

Making SUVs illegal? Because who wants more of our freedoms taken away?  

Raising mpg standards?  There is no magic way to suddenly make vehicles reach that.  What about trucks hauling stuff around? Again, why would anyone want further restrictions on our freedom?

Bring manufacturing jobs back? Sure thing. All they need to do is significantly lower the restrictions and income taxes on businesses.  With the highest income tax on businesses in the world, it's no wonder they are all leaving the country.

Wind farms - high cost to maintain.  Besides, California refuses to put them up in their backyard and that area along the west coast is probably the single best contiuous source of wind power.

Abolish corporate health care - How?  The company is the one setting it up and running it.  The government has no involvement, thankfully.

National debt - who knows.  Even with Clinton's supposed surplus the national debt still continued to increase each and every year he was in office. Why wasn't the surplus money going towards the debt?

Bridges - I believe that is a state thing. Most states are strapped for cash.  This would be impossible to do without increasing the national debt or else waiting until budgets get cut back in line.

I bet all public officials take money from some form of lobbyist. There wouldn't be any left. Not that it would be a bad thing. Certainly couldn't do any worse.

So you want millions to lose jobs and for people to live at a third-world rate of living?

Nuclear power is a good idea-but the land you want to use for windfarms could be put to much better use.  Why make SUV's illegal?  Why insist on restricting people on what they can purchase just because you don't like them?  =

Talk to the Democrats first before we stop buying foreign oil.  They refuse to let us develop our own sources of oil.  The U.S. economy would die without the foreign oil we currently buy.

I actually think the Prez should not have a limit--why get rid of a good one just because they have served a certain number of years.  Term limits is just a control measure because people are too stupid to vote someone out of office when they do a cruddy job.

U.S. security means we MUST play an active role in the world--whenever we have withdrawn behind our borders we have suffered the consequences.  The world is an evil place and we must be active, globally, confronting that evil.

Abolishing corporate health care would seriously hurt the level and access to health care for a lot of people.

Last but not least--why have the government do all that?  Last thing we need is bigger government.  Instead, have government remove restrictions so that the private sector, who does it much better, can do what you list, like build Nuclear plants.

If you don't like the system, work to fix it.

If you don't like the system and refuse to work to fix the problem, LEAVE.

Well, the US wants the money from Iraq's oil. They wont stop buying foreign oil. Otherwise we would have to drill Alaska, and that would upset wildlife.

I really do wish we could do all of this- it would take a while, but would be worth it. And yes I would have no problem not having the option to drive an SUV. It's not necessary and people with huge cars make me sick!

Because the US Government was formed to be Democratic, not Authoritarian.    In addition, certain items above are managed at state level, not federal.  

Even if some of these things are brought to Congress for discussion, one should never assume anything on the list above is supported by the majority.

You can't just one day decide to do all these things, there reasons why it takes time, and why some are just out of the question.

Most of those take money, and no-one likes to spend money unless their is a motivation to, and currently, there is not.

You need to look higher than the level you're talking about. Try "central banking", "CFR", "Trilateral Commission", "Bilderberg" none of which has any other agenda than destroying America by design to make way for a North American Union. Once you understand that these are the puppeteers of the US political system, it will all become clear to you.
