Question:

Why doesn't the fielding team bring in an outfielder on intentional walks?

We've all seen it - a pitcher intentionally walking an opposing batter, and throws the high and outside pitch a little too high and outside (over the catcher's head). If someone is on base, particularly third base, the catcher has to run the ball down and flick to the pitcher covering home.

In these situations where there is an intentional walk - particularly in a big game - why not bring in the right fielder and have him back the catcher up, so he doesn't have to chase down any balls?

  1. This happens once, maybe twice a year. To think this happens enough to warrant back up is asinine. A pitcher should be able to play catch from 60 feet, 6 inches away.

  2. Because only the catcher is allowed to be in foul territory, and he must stay in his box until the pitcher releases the ball.

Also, it is extremely rare for the pitch to get by the catcher on an intentional walk.

  3. Because every player (except the catcher) has to be in fair territory. Its a rule.

  4. Not only is it a rule that all players have to be in fair territory, you could have be two situations that arise

    1. the marlins had (I think it was hanley ramirez) a few years ago, where there was a guy on thrid with one out, so they were going to intentionally walk him.  Well Ramirez had other ideas, he stepped toward the pitch and hit the ball to the opposite field, scoring the game winning run.  Lets hope pitchers can get the ball far enough outside so that the ball is unhittable, but the catcher can still field the ball. (unless you are rick ankiel)

    2.  Happens all the time when teams fake an intentional walk and then throw a strike.  You wouldnt only want two players manning the outfield

  5. Because if the pitcher cant play catch he should not be playing.

  6. because it is too much trouble. the pitcher is expected to be able to throw a ball to the catcher.
