Apple's iphone and some of its laptops do not come with a replaceable battery. You can send it to Apple to get a new battery, for something like $85.

Why doesn't Apple make the battery more easily and cheaply replaceable? Is this to encourage consumers to just spend more money on a new model (a strategy that has worked pretty well with Ipods)?

Isn't encouraging people to toss out the old and buy new even though the old unit is still 90% functioning environmentally wasteful?
