Why doesn't vets, or anyone else, know....?

that male cats can be banded to neuter them? I posted here and elsewhere with questions about how to neuter males cats and all I got was, "you can't do it, take them to a vet!" When I talked to my vet about doing it myself, he said you can't band a cat, but told me the "boot method." (stick them head down in a boot and cut) Well guess what, I successfully banded 4 male cats. They don't go crazy after the band is applied. They don't claw themselves apart. After a few days the testes become hard and can either be cut, without any pain to the cat, or left to fall off just like my sheep.

I don't understand why this method has not been tested in any official studies. What a great and CHEAP way to reduce the number of feral and unwanted cats. I will eventually get my females in to be spayed, but for now, No More Intact Males in my Barn! Why isn't this done more often?!

  1. first through the s*****m are many vessels and nerves. If no anesthetics is applied you may injure the cat and even yourself. if the band is clamped unevenly on the vessels between the s*****m and abdomen the cat may hemorrhage after wards.

I totally agree with you on the expense of vet costs but it is best to be safe. I have only band neutered sheep into weathers but the vet does my other animals.

  2. As someone who used to be a vet tech for both large and small animals, I didn't know this was possible. I wonder if the same people who cry, "poor kitty" circumcise their boys? If it works and it's sanitary, then I'm glad to hear the information. Pain is something you can get over if it's not a lifelong condition. I'm glad you're being responsible with the overpopulation of pets here.

  3. How would YOU LIKE TO BE BANDED? I am sure it hurts the cat,  there are more humane ways!!!

  4. You yourself said why, because it is so cheap. I have banded my cats and any strays that come to visit me.

Vets know about this, and they tell you that the cats can get tetanus or other infections from it.

If you can use it with bone areas like docking tails on sheep, why not just soft tissue, like it gets used for on cattle and sheep?

Well, after over 30 years of banding my cats, I have never lost one to this method.

They seem more upset about getting held on their back while I do the job than the banding itself. I think I have had one cat go vomit after the process, but other than that, he was fine. They l**k the area for about 30 seconds and walk a little funny until the thing goes numb, less than a minute. Then they are fine.

The first time i did it, i was confused about three weeks after the banding to come home and find them with their own little fuzzy play toy!

So yep, the cost. If everyone knew that instead of $60+ bucks for getting a male cat neutered you could do it for the cost of a 3 cent rubber donut- who would take their cats to them!

There are lobbying groups to keep out animals "safe". Permits to practice animal medicine, etc.  so the bottom line really is money, not care for the feral animals or the destruction they can do, and injuries they can get into being uncut males.

Lord, do not tell the bunny huggers about the burdizzo! bad enough they have heard about the elastrator, now they will not want folks to use them on teh cattle or sheep.

ps, as a former vet tech, I KNOW how they neuter a male cat here is the humane blow by blow that the Dr. used to do in the clinic I worked at:

    WARNING GRAPHIC DESCRIPTION AHEAD

1 give a shot to knock them out- usually Ketamine at that time- it leaves a weird taste in their mouth and when they are waking up, they scratch themselves for about an hour in the face trying to make it go away....

Once the animal is asleep- the hair gets plucked form the little s*****m, and it is washed with surgical scrub, rinsed and iodined.

The doctor comes in and cuts the end off the s*****m, grabs his forceps and pulls each t******e out of the sack, being sure to stretch the vas deferens . Each one  is pulled until the testes comes free, and the vas gets a knot tied in it before letting it go back into the scrotal sack. The end of the sack is given a puff of furacin powder, a quick antibiotic shot to curtail any infection and the cat put into the wake up cage.

So the humane way it to have the animal stressed for a day or longer in a strange place, getting open wounds  that they have to have antibiotics for, and anesthetized with a chemical that makes them claw their face. An open cut that you have to watch to keep flies form getting into it, and their inside parts pulled until they break.

Wonder why he hides under the bed for three days after getting fixed?

  5. I'm not sure why they don't do it, because I know it's done to horses and to livestock all the time. It not cost effective to neuter large livestock for one. You do have to watch for infections and I think people feel it's just easier to put the cat out while neutering him.

I'd say that vet aren't going to approve of this method for one big reason.. MONEY.. they make make money neutering animals. so if people banded more then VET would make LESS.

I agree, that if you have band cats, it's easier to band them than a large animal and as long as you watch for infections it's quite safe and like you said less cats will be born...

By the way, people say poor cat, but I bet  those are the same ones that allow thier cats to run amuck and reproduce.

  6. I have an idea!!!  I have this rubber band, and if you come over here for a sec, I'll show you a trick........

What a great and CHEAP way to reduce the number of morons in this country....,,,
