I think it's down for maintenance.

I suppose it has to do with using an "all new and shiny" Flash application. Flash is ok for movies and simple interaction, but not for massive online games. The "old" Java based chess application does not look that nice, but it works. I used to play chess years ago using the Java app and never had any problems.  Yahoo made the wrong choice implementing it with Flash, instead of updating the old Java app. Because... Java can look flashy too.... if you know swing. Flash is for dummies
