Why doesnt Boo Radley come out of his/her house?(To Kill a Mockingbird)?

And what does he/she have to do with the story? also, what do you think about the childrens attitudes and ideas of boo?

 There are many theories in the book. But I think it's because his  brother hides him away because he is a "disgrace to the Radley family." But Jem also thinks it could be because he wants to stay in his house.
