I have an AICD (internal defibrillator) in my chest, which is made of some kind of metal. When I go through a metal detector, it doesnt beep. Why? Is it only certain kinds of metal or something?

  1. It's probably because your heart is hidden beneath layers of body fat, muscle, skin, bone and other stuff, so it would take a lot of getting through, with clothes as well.

Also, the sensitivity and detectiveness of the detector and perhaps the type of metal it is made from may affect it.

  2. There are several factors: the type of metal, the sensitivity of the machine (hand-set), the humidity, and what is covering the metal. Sometimes I have to remove my watch; sometimes I can just cover it with my hand to get thru. Funny thing -- my machete always seems to set off the detector.

  3. Differences on sensitivity of the detectors, like others said. But also the size of the metal, the type of metal.

The detector is a large coil, or pair of coils, connected to capacitors to form a resonant circuit. The frequency is high (RF). A metal large enough will change the resonant frequency, and trigger the alarm.

  4. yep and i think it depends on the metal detector, the one at carowins mage my belly ring go off and ive never had it go off anywhere else, i suppose it depends
