In a pub not a bar. No lite beer, more than just Heniken on tap ( that so funny) and can stand up after 4 pints.

  1. Maybe it's because they do not get blind drunk, abusive and agressive like the British. What sad person wants to drink 4 pints at £275 a pint

  2. Not all Americans drink that way. 4 pints isn't all that much, only a little more than 5 beers. I can put away a lot more than that and still stand and walk just fine, and I'm not the only Yank who can do that. Plus the Brits drink like fish. Everyone knows that. No one knows why.

Reading Brian's response inspired me, ye great daft bugger. Ever tried putting back three or four straight shots of tequila? They probably don't even sell it on your water-logged island. =) I hope you Brits have a good sense of humor, because Americans like to tease, too!

  3. Americans don't do anything properly. They have no sense of tradition, that tradition transmitted down through the ages, of getting dead drunk every weekend. It comes hand in hand with gout.

  4. A lot of people are assuming you are British and I will too.  I do have to disagree with your generalization for a few reasons.

First, American's do definitely drink in pubs.  Your style of pub, of course, tends to be a little different than ours.  Personally, there is nothing I love better than an honest British pub with cask conditioned ales.  Sadly, they are few and far between here in the U.S.  We simply don't have the pub tradition here in U.S. that has been established in Britain.  One advantage of our pubs over yours, in most states they are open until 2:00 a.m. minimum.  (In some states they are open until 4:00 or even 24 hours.)  I find the 11:00 closing times of British pubs a little annoying.

I would make one more additional point on the pub-scene.  American homes tend to be bigger and better designed for entertaining.  Furthermore, our alcohol distribution means better accessibility than our British counterparts.  In my (albeit limited) experience vacationing in Britain, bottled beer was purchased in pints more often than 6 packs, 12 packs, or 24 packs as you often can find it here in the U.S.  Even in London, we had a hard time finding bottled beer or liquor.  Difficult to have a home party if you're buying beer by the bottle for 2 quid or so...  In contrast, any city in the U.S. has tons of alcohol available in "convenience stores" located everywhere!

We obviously do have more than just lagers on taps.  The American microbrew and craft brew industries have exploded over the past 15 years.  While British breweries are closing, consolidating, and discontinuing some of their most interesting beer brands/styles, the American beer scene is filling bars with wonderful alternates.  The opposite trend is occurring in your country as CAMRA is quick to point out.  Last time I vacationed in Britain, I saw a heck of lot more people ordering Stella or other mainland lagers than I did British ale.  Actually, according to 2005 study 54% of the beer consumed in Britain is lager:

Heineken, Stella, etc, it's all c**p.

As to your last point ... just silly.  I've been to Britain twice and noticed variable alcohol tolerance among my British friends.  Some, could probably have drank me under the table.  Others were noticeably inebriated after a short time.

  5. I'm from England and I think that the majority of English drinkers are, when it comes to alcohol awareness,  thick, moronic, ill-educated and should face an IQ test before being let loose in the average bar!

They drink the worst beers available to mankind in excess although are often rolling drunk once they've sniffed the crown cap.

Our friends on the European mainland have it sussed, and I try to follow their lead because as a drinking nation we're an embarrassment!!

The big exceptions are those who know that CAMRA isn't a device you take pictures with!!

  6. why are you all being so nasty towards the british? if the boot was on the other foot and we were slagging off amercians there would be murder on here.  saying we all drink like fish ????????? where do you get that info from???????????

  7. I think you are wrong in your narrow perception of what an American drinker is.

"In a pub not a bar"

A pub is a bar, a flat is an apartment and a lift is an elevator. But you knew that, didn't you, mister worldly traveler. You're just being daft, which is your word for dumb.

    "No lite beer"

There's no light beer in the UK? Perhaps not, but they've got fifty different types of alchopops and beer with fruit in it. Sorry, you win no points there.

    "More than just..."

My local tavern (that's another word for a bar, although it implies food is served) has fifteen draughts on tap, four of which are American and two of those are Microbrews or local brews. There's also Newcastle and Harp for anyone in the mood for a British ale. A place in the next town has a 300 beer world-traveller contest where you can earn a tankard and other gear by trying some amazing brews. The family grocery down the block carries several dozen different varieties from the common to lambecs and mead. We know our beer here, senior snob.

    "4 Pints"

And we end on a pathetic note: "We can drink more than you" doesn't impress anyone but frat boys and morons. Grow up.

  8. I'm Canadian.  Drinking is what I do.  That, curling and hockey.

American beer has less alcohol in it than Canadian (I don't know if it has less than European beer?) so their tolerances are just naturally lower.

  9. I'll take that challenge. Four pints is my warm up. My standard beer is 5.9 ABV so I am ready.

    I agree Heineken sucks.

  10. That's the price we pay for having dental work that doesn't look like it was performed by trained monkeys.

  11. to generalize is not nice....a "holy-er than thou" attitude is also especially abrasive.

  12. lol...Duvel ftw!

  13. ???

  14. why cant ppl explaine things properly???

  15. The proper way to drink is all in the mind.  Who told you that you have one?

  16. I drink at bars and pubs. I wouldn't touch Heineken in a bottle, can, or on tap. It'll take a lot more than 4 pints to get me to stop standing up straight.

  17. because we can't stand the bloody Brits
