Why don't Baffert and Lukas have horses in the Derby this year?

  1. Only 20 horses are allowed to enter the Derby.  They pick the horses by the amount of money they made based on graded stakes earnings.  Neither Lukas or Baffert met those qualifications.    Lukas has a horse that is 25th.  If 5 horses should drop out or decide not to run, then his horse will be eligible to run.


  2. Because they already ran all their 3 year olds into the ground.

  4. Their contenders did not do well enough to qualify for the Derby.
