Why don't DJ's identify the songs and artists their playing anymore?

You might get them to list the last few artists they just played or are going to play, and that's if you're lucky. They used to tell you who it was and the name of the song. Why did they stop?

  1. Radio Satations are paying their on-air talent less and less. The system is completely automated in 99% of the major markets. This being said with less experienced talent the amount of on-air talk time is very minimal. This is also because of the RBDS.

My suggestion to you is buy a radio that uses the RBDS.

Radio Broadcast Data System. MtyJeep's radio has this feature.

  2. they think you are keeping up with the musicians, bands rap artist etc,

Also there is the fact that they don't want to be held responsible for the publics response to the lyrics. it's called deny ability

Ever noticed that movies have a disclaimer on them

The "opinions of the cast are not and do not necessarily reflect the views or the company"

    deny ability

  3. This is one of the biggest complaints stations get (from both listeners and the record labels and artists) and the research reveals this fault as well. Why station PDs don't pay attention to it is (and always has been) a mystery to me. When I was jocking and a PD, my guys IDed every song, every time.

  4. I think the correct answer is a combination of the (mistaken) belief that most radio listeners are "active listeners" who spend lots of time keeping up with the latest hits instead of people who have the radio on as background noise and only occasionally "prick up their ears" if something especially interests them and the "voice track" phenomenon meaning that the guy/gal you're hearing isn't REALLY at the station live, they're a pre-recorded MP3 that may have been emailed or FTPed in from another state or even country. (A giveaway that you're listening to a voicetrack is if you never hear a current temperature. If the station NEVER announces current temp, it's definitely "Memorex".)

And I agree with the guy who says it is radio listeners biggest irritation. The DJ gets paid to sit and play that new Weezer song 20 times a day but the average listener flipping on the radio on the way to work might hear 1 time A WEEK. There's a reason we want you to tell us the name of the flippin' song.

And that goes for that OLD Weezer song that somehow we've never heard before too. (How many times do you see a question on Y!A asking "Who sings that 'When you're on a holiday...' song? And what's it called?) Maybe not EVERY time...but it's OK to do a backsell on "oldies" every now and then. There are always people who are "new to the format" that won't know the hit gold and recurrent stuff.

  5. Pretty much because they want to pack as much commercial load and banter as some people love the music announcements whereas others hate the long lists of songs....

Besides in most cities, the station website lists them as well as services such as yes.com do a real good job of listing what is playing

For instance, here is a list from z100 new york

  6. You're listening to the wrong radio station. New songs are always Identified. If we talked before and after every song to identify it though, how annoying would that get? I've heard some stations that have a sweeper between every song like...Mariah Carey..Touch my body. And that's all it says...Even MORE annoying. The recurrents/golds (older stuff) is usually not identified because it's older and more well known....who cares now, it's on to the new stuff. Do we really need to identify Celine Dion My heart will go on anymore?? probably not, that's pretty much a given. But you MAY not know the new Mariah song so that should be identified. AC style is more likely to identify more songs and backselling. like"that was celine dion, before that, Michael Bolton with soul provider. On the way we'll hear from john secada, Phil collins, and sting" Could be you're also listening to a station(s) that is voice tracked...pre recorded. The talent may not even live in the same state and that kinda stuff seems to go by the wayside in those cases.
