Why don't I get an economic stimulus check?

My grandparents and I were talking, and we were wondering why I don't get an economic stimulus check. I'm 18 years old and I worked from August to January and paid income tax. Have I not paid taxes long enough or something?

  1. I don't think you paid in enough.I think it is based on a yearly tax return

  2. Two probable reasons:

    1.  You could be claimed as a dependent by another taxpayer.  Dependents are not eligible for the rebates.

    2.  You earned less than $3,000 in 2007.  You must either have tax liability of $300 or more OR have at least $3,000 in Qualifying Income to receive a rebate.

  3. Go to the IRS website; all questions will be answered.

  4. Did you file a tax return?

Did you make at least $3000?

Were you a dependent on anybody else's tax return?

The first two answers need to be "yes" and the last one "no".

  5. You are under age 19.  Unless you paid over half of your own support, you can be claimed by the relative (your parents, your grandparents) that you lived with.

Dependents do not get a stimulus payment.

  6. If you are claimed as a dependent, you will be ineligible for the rebate, but you may still benefit under the plan.

While the rebate depends on your 2007 status and income, it is actually a rebate toward your 2008 taxes. According to the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008, taxes would be cut in 2008 from 10 percent to zero percent on the first $6,000 dollars of taxable income for individual taxpayers.

So if you have taxable income in 2008, you will see a tax cut when you file in 2009.

  7. Do you live with your grandparents or your parents? Did they claim you as a dependent? If so you do not get a stimulus check.
