  1. City people's skin colour is light, but in the countryside, most Mongolians look brown.

I'm a Mongolian and as far as i remember, every Mongolian's skin changes its color into light yellow in winter and becomes brown in summer

  2. Variation in allelic distribution amongst populations.

  3. It is genetic and takes many generations, also remember the vast empires once was, so mixing to others has also an effect.

  4. There's sun in Africa, so why aren't Africans white?

  5. Excellent question.

Recent research has correlated the amount of UV exposure in an area with the darkness of people's skin living there. So it seems the primary determinant is UV exposure--which is affected by annual cloud cover, latitude and elevation. UV radiation will damage folic acid which is crucial to DNA synthesis. Interestingly, females everywhere tend to be slightly lighter than males.

However, there is also an opposite trend toward lighter skin in areas where the diet is low in Vitamin D. Our bodies can synthesize Vit D, but it needs some UV penetration to do it.

Final skin color is a result of the tension between protecting folic acid in our blood, and synthesizing Vit D, with protecting folic acid being the most important factor.

Interestingly, when we were descending from chimps we probably started out with white skin (chimps have white skin under their fur.) As we lost our fur and came out of the trees and onto the African savanna we needed darker skin to protect us from UV light. Then as we migrated away from the intense African sun we lost some of our pigment. Lighter races still carry the genes for darker skin and it is estimated to take about 1000 years for a migrating population's tone to adjust to a new UV intensity.

  6. "White" is only one of many races.  It does not have a monopoly on colder regions.  Not everyone from a hot region is "Black," either.  Go to the library and take out a book on the subject.

  7. Your DNA would still produce that type of pigmentation. The same as an African or Hispanic would not become white if they lived up there.

  8. It's not about how bright the sunlight is, UV and Vitamin D gets through just as much anyway.

What determines a race, or even an individual's skin tone is how much time they spend outside.

You'll see that even in Britain there are some Celtic people who have leathery and tan skin from spending their whole life outside.

I guess the Mongolians do alot of outside work.
