  1. i got it, trick question, right?

drivers DO use a hose and pump to fuel THEIR cars.  at the track, the drivers use a gas man and a catch-can guy to fuel their owner's cars.

  2. That would be funny, then they need the cable across the pit box so when they run over it, it goes "DING,DING!!!"

  3. It is faster and more efficient to fuel the cars using a tank because it is just as quick as a pump, however a pump would just get in the way of everything. Also, if they just use a 11 gallon tank, it keeps a constant value of the amount of gas going in to all of the cars, so everyone has the same amount of fuel.

  4. it might be faster the other way and more modern but i think part of it is it is an old nascar rule and tradition gas man gas can they need to just leave that one alone my opinion

  5. It is much faster but can cause excessive spillage. Also can you put a big advertising decal on a hose?

  6. Gravity feed is more efficient.

  7. Because it would take longer to fill the cars up by hose or tank. Seriously. A good pit stop today is 13-14 seconds. When's the last time it took you 13-14 seconds to get 11-16 gallons of gas?

Never. Because pumping the gas into the cas is alot slower than their 11 gallon tanks that they use now. Instead of 13-14 second pit stops, we would have like 5 minute pit stops. There's no fun on that.

EDIT: Wait. Are you talking about a hose like they use in open wheel racing? If so, then I think it's, because of where the tank opening is located on the car, the hose would be in the way for the rear tire changer & tire carrier.

EDIT: Corundogs ~ Hey man, I'm a NASCAR only fan. The only reason I thought of the open wheel thing is because I remember the CSI Miami episode that was done on it. So, as far as safety issues, I'm was unaware of them. Like I said, I am a NASCAR only fan. Sorry.

  8. the same reason they don't build million dollar cars that practically drive themselves like F1 does. NASCAR is purposely low tech to put the race in the hands of the drivers and crew where it should be. in other words, it would make things too easy. it takes a h**l of an athlete to man handle those 2 big heavy cans of fuel and fill the car with 22 gallons in 13 seconds. there would be very little skill involved in hooking a hose up to the car. the same principal applies to changing tires. it would be much easier and faster to have one wheel hub instead of having to change 5 lug nuts on each tire, but that would take human error and the threat of having loose wheels out of the equation, and that would be detrimental to the sport. NASCAR wants athletes in their pit crews, not engineers. the people who mentioned speed and safety as the reasons are misinformed, you could fill the car with fuel electronically in HALF the time you can do it manually, and you can do it with no safety issues, just watch an F1 race and see for yourself. the only other answer here that was correct was the guy above who mentioned the cost, that is certainly a factor.

  9. Brian France was thinking of doing that, while ''HE'' was filling up at the station, the other day...

Then he'd realized that he pulled off, with the gas hose, still in his car !!!  lol

  10. I am surprised no one said SAFETY???

I had no idea...believe it or not, there are some MAJOR FANS that don't know every single solitary aspect of what/why/how/when/where they do stuff!  HAHA!!

But when I read the question, my only thought was SAFETY!

I mean, think of how many fires they have already??

How many cans are driven off with?  Can you imagine what would happen with a hose still attached to the car?  How many people it could take out while being pulled along with the car?  How many fires might start with a dropped nozzle or again, hose left in car?

Or not even fire, or nozzle left in car...but again, the hose coming across all of those people and people working so fast - think about how fast 13 seconds is!

    Just a nightmare!!!

But it's nice to read these and learn why it ACTUALLY happens - faster!  HHUUHHH, never thought of that  :-)

  11. it way to dangerous to have pumps near the pits

besides  the cost would be to great to do that

  12. The small amount of fuel that is added to the fuel cell is added faster if  it is gravity fed, and it is easier to measure the exact amount of fuel needed. Also the fact that it is gravity fed means it's not mechanically operated, it's maintenance free, with nothing to fail. And  is'nt connected by anything ( a hose )

  13. It goes in faster and then they wegh the can fuull and after thefill the car. When you tip the can has high as you can the more comes out faster. How would you do it with a hose? If it wasn't good then NASCAR wouln't keep it around these many years. Go 88
