  1. When The Princess Anne, Princess Royal married Mark Philips in 1973, The Queen was believed to have offered him a peerage on his wedding day, which he turned down. This may also have been the specific wish of Princess Anne. (As female-line grandchildren of the Sovereign, Princess Anne's children were never eligible for the style "Royal Highness" or the title "Prince/Princess" under the terms of George V's letters patent of 1917)

When Peter Philips was born, his parents were said to have refused offers from The Queen that would have led to him being born in the Peerage. As such, Phillips was the first royal baby to be born a commoner, having not even a courtesy style, for more than 500 years. The same situation applied to Zara Phillips when she was born four years later.

  2. Because when they were born Anne wanted her children to have as normall a life as possible and she refused titles for them .Good for her. I like that .

  3. Because their parents wanted them to grow up as normal people.

  4. Their mother's decision.

  5. because their parents wanted them to grow up as normal as possible... Anne knew her children would be way down the line in the succession to the thrown and basically wanted them to grow up just as upper class.. to help them be *NORMAL*

Sorry Jeremy .. they were STILL entitled to have titles ... It was NOT Their position in the line of succession that denied them a title ... THEY would not have recieved the titles of Prince or Princess but more likely the titles Viscount( as with Viscount Linley .. the son of Princess Margaret) and Lady ( as with Margaret's daughter...

the decision for Zara and Peter NOT to have titles was purely the decision of their parents.

  6. Their mother, Anne, The Princess Royal, asked that they be able to live as normally as possible without the responsibility of being a full time royal and thus allowed much coveted privacy. Queen Elizabeth had letters patent drawn up to bestow a title upon their father Mark Phillips, but he declinned as well.

  7. Anne and her then husband Mark Phillips chose not to have their children have titles. And Phillips himself turned a title down as well.

  9. The rules of the British aristocracy state that only the children of male-line descendants of the monarch automatically receive titles.  Since the Phillips are female-line descendants (that is, children of Elizabeth's daughter), they have no titles (though it's possible they could be granted them at some point in the future).
