Firstly, hoofs don't get flats.

Secondly, hoofs are kinda cool.

Thirdly, hoofs make neat clopity sounds/

Fourthly, hoofs are easy to paint any color.

Why were tires the chosen device to make contact with the roads? What was so wrong with hoofs?

  1. for the same reason horses dont have tires

  2. But cars DO have hooves!  They are called wheels.  And the shoes on these hooves are called tires.

If you examine the cross section of any modern automobile tire, you will see it is the familiar horse-shoe shape.  The makers of cars were no dummies.  They knew that in order for the car to go anywhere, they had to get optimum traction, while reducing wear and fatigue on the car and its power train - They had to have shoes for each horse (-power) hidden in the internal combustion engine.

Also, it is no coincidence that horseshoes are made of steel, and tires have steel belts to give them strength and resistance to wear.  And while one horse makes clopity sounds, a hundred of them stampeding through the streets would sound more like a continuous roar.  For this reason, tires are made of rubber to reduce the amount of racket hundred horse-power cars would otherwise make.
