Question:

Why don't certain Hispanics want to be identified with Mexicans? Is there something wrong with Mexicans?

I've known many Mexicans and I have no problem with the ones that I have met.

But last year I met a Puerto Rican girl who acted as if she dislikes Mexicans!

She got mad when I identified her with my Mexican friends and swore that she was better than Mexicans.

Well I was pissed off!!

I did not understand how one Hispanic could discriminate against another Hispanic.

It reminded me of the self-hate issues within my own (the Black) community.

I was DISGUSTED!!

Later on in the year I found out that many Hispanics felt this way and discriminated against Mexicans!!

My questin is:

Why do non-Mexican Hispanics feel superior to Mexicans?

  1. It's the same reason why a Korean hates to be identified as Chinese.

    EDIT:

    and Mr.T is an a*****e....

.........that's all I needed to say....

  2. Mexican people are wonderful. I wish I'm a Mexican.

  3. I think you could be wrong. because I used to have a girl in class who was half & half & if that had been the case she wouldnt exist. There was obviously some LOVE in the process of someone being half Puerto Rican &half Mexican. lol

Or maybe... it's because some of my fellow Mexicans in ethnicity are darker than Puerto Ricans. I myself have i guess an olive type of tone. sadly though, some still look at skin color as a HUGE issue! :(

Also alot of Mexicans are possibly poorer than Puerto Ricans. that could be a real explanation. see, the reason they're poorer is that the RICH Mexicans stay in Mexico. So there's a stereotype we get when we live here. There are many many many many issues. The only thing i can say is that I'm proud of being ethnically MEXICAN & that we'll always have that pride!

    edit:

MR.T- you're in the wrong! Mexicans don't feel that way. Other people like you would go as far as to call us lazy but that's exactly what we're not...My people do the dirtiest jobs & that's a reason to be admired!

The only Mexicans you've met mustve been cholos. I have a problem with cholos & they give us a bad name. Most of all those Mexicans who happen to be illegal are of course not the only Mexicans but just because youve had a bad day, doesnt mean you should complain. Yes youve got it bad but people from poor countries have had it worse!

I happen to be a legal Mexican...but i still stand up for these people. I think u ought to be ashamed of urself for saying that. there's no excuse for HATE!

  4. I agree with JackFrost,

and OP if you've never assumed that every hispanic was mexican than why did you indentified her with your mexican friends? surely, you know that there are a lot of cultural differences.

  5. Most "Hispanics" have an inferiority complex.

Trust me I live next to a Peruvian family and I swear that their dream is to be accepted by White Americans. It's really sad and pathetic...

  6. well if she is puerto rican shes not a "mexican" obvioulsy.

being hispanic..refers to all of the "hispanic origin"

people all have different judgements against different people..sadly but surley. I am mexican puerto rican and cuban..and I cannot stand when people down talk any of the hispanics!!

  7. I personally don't hate Mexicans and don't think I'm better than them.  But I don't like being called Mexican because I'm NOT!  It's annoying!!!

  8. Because unlike many other Hispanics, Mexicans don't do things the legal way.  They cross our borders Illegally and stay indefinately, making it harder for other law abiding hispanics to attain citizenship.  They work for penny's making it harder for other hispanics to get well paying jobs.  Mexicans feel we owe them citizenship and they will just do whatever they want.  Mexicans think they are better than everyone else, causing rivalry between other Hispanics.  Mexican's feel that Puerto Ricans were given what they are entitled to - U.S. Citzenship, and mexicans are jealous of Puerto Ricans.  Mexico needs to stand up against their own corruption and fix their government, they are not entitled to ours.

  9. It's not that they don't want to be identified as Mexicans, it's that they don't like when non-Hispanics assume all Hispanics are Mexican.that happens alot. Hispanic  seems to be synonymous with Mexican in the minds of many non-Hispanics, and that annoys Hispanics.

  10. I don't know about the strength of the reaction, but Mexicans and Puerto Ricans are quite different, have a different mix of heritages, and a very different history and significantly different culture.  It's similar to someone mistaking you for a South African or a Australian.  You likely wouldn't get mad, but you would surely correct them, wouldn't you?  And if the same assumption was made of you over and over, might you not grow somewhat irritated?  The same is true for other Latin Americans and South Americans when they get lumped in with Mexicans simply because many Americans assume anyone who has a Spanish accent must be Mexican.
