Question:

Why don't employers return phone calls?

I interviewed with this place four weeks ago. I'm currently unemployed and NEED a job as soon as humanly possible, and this is the only one I've gotten an interview for that will pay the bills.

Having said that, I had a fantastic interview, they were extremely polite, and said they'd get back to me in a week. It's been four weeks.

I called once last week--3 weeks after the interview and 2 after this imaginary "one-week deadline"--and left a message. Another week passed with no response. I called them again, very politely, and got an extremely rude secretary who cut me off and assured me they'd "get back to me in the near future." She then hung up on me.

What the h**l am I supposed to do here?

  1. Leave it.  If they were interested, they would call you back.  They are not interested.  The secretary who cut you off confirmed it.  You don't want to work for a company who treats their prospective employees this way anyway.

  2. There's not a lot you can do. Either they aren't going to hire you, or they really haven't made a decision. Keep calling them back every week to check in and show them that you are really interested in going to work for them. Other than that, keep looking elsewhere until you hear back from them.
