Why don't manual transmission cars have gear indicators?

Why don't most manual cars have gear indicators like automatics do? It'd be helpful for drivers to look at the dash to see what gear they're in as opposed to staring all the way at the shifter.

  1. you should know what gear you are in at all times


  2. If some one needed a indicator then they should not be driving a car

  3. Once you get a feel for the car, you will know what gear you are in, without looking at the lever...that's why a manual is so much better to drive, you become much more involved with the driving, and get a much better feel for the car,  than in an automatic. (Although, sometimes, when I get distracted, I must admit that there are times that I forget what gear I am in).
