Question:

Why don't many blacks and mexican eat sushi?

I went out with my friends and went to famous Japanese restaurant, and most of the customers were Asians and whites. A friend of mine is black and he said "I don't know if I can eat raw fish..." and 2 other friends of mine who are mexicans said "None of my family ever triend sushi before".

I dont even see sushi restaurant in Black and Mexican area. But I see so many sushi places in white area. It's interesting.

I was just wondering why they do not like(or eat) sushi. I am white and love sushi!!!

  1. I don't think most African Americans like raw fish, at least that's what some of my friends tell me--I'd say that half of my A.A. friend slike Sushi, and the other half don't.


  2. I know plenty of Mexicans who like sushi.

    And most Africans I know actually live in Africa, where there are indeed no sushi restaurants.

    My personal theory is that white Americans tend to have the mainstream ethnic cuisines more often than people of different ethnicities because there really is no "American" cuisine--virtually everything is from Europe or Asia, except corn--while the others already have cuisines they consider their own.

    But I could be way off.

  3. Mmmm.... Ceviche!

    I know lots of mexicans who eat sushi.  Also, all my black friends in our core group of friends always are up for going to eat sushi with me.  

    Maybe you are eating in white neighborhoods to start with?

  4. I have a friend who is Mexican, and he told me that sushi is too expensive for him. 2 pieces of sushi, especially when it comes to fatty toro or uni, they usually cost $10 and up. He said he would rather go to McDonalds and buy a meal for $5 than paying so much on sushi. That could be one of the reasons why they do not eat sushi like asians and whites do.

  5. Mexicans eat plenty of sushi but prepaired different and called Ceviche. Lots of "RAW "squid, clams, mussles ,konch, octopus, shrimp marinated overnight in lime juice. It is just not the Japanese version. It is way better. Next time you are in a grocery store that has a hispanic trade, go back to the seafood counter and look for " Marisco mixtos " Try a pound and put it in lime juice over night. Good stuff. Use Key limes or Mexican Limons. The small juicey ones.
