Why don't more Canadians take trips to Ellesmere Island, Yukon, Iqaluit, and the extreme north?

If I were Canadian, and I was born to lands so far North, I'd make at least a few major excursions towards the North Pole.

I'd take some daring adventurous trips to the far north. If you are a Canadian from the urban southern provinces, I'd like to hear your adventure stories.

  1. 1. There are no facilities there

    2. The weather is extreme, even by Canadian standards

    3. Everything there is extremely expensive

    4. There are no flights to most of the far north, though there are a few flights to Iqaluit.

There is a huge sense of romance about the far north that is rather misplaced. Stories abound but they never mention the unending swarms of blackflies that have driven men mad during the Arctic's painfully short summer.

  2. I'd love to go but it's expensive and more than my travel budget will stand. I've heard a lot of the adventure stories, and seen photos too, since my father did mineral prospecting all over the Arctic, including Ellesmere Island.

  3. I'm on a holiday to the Yukon for the second time in two years.  It's wonderful up here in the summer - beautiful weather, spectacular scenery, and wonderful people.  It's a long drive to get here, and the gas is expensive along the way, but it's well worth the expense.  I've just been on the road for a few days but have already spent time soaking in a hotspring in northern BC, boating on Teslin Lake, and just enjoying the scenery along the road to Whitehorse.

For anyone who's thinking about making the trip up to the North, I say go for it!  It's the trip of a lifetime, and you just might fall in love with the country up here.

  4. I love the North! I was born in Southern Alberta, and have spent approximately 3 1/2 years in the North. The reason I moved back South was to be with my husband, and to be closer to family. It is very far from everything, and expensive to travel back and forth.

But my husband and I plan to take a motorbike trip to the Yukon along the Alaska Highway, and may even move there in a few years. It is absolutely magical!

  5. My father is planning on going to the Yukon this summer, and i might go with him.

also, when i graduate high school, I'm hoping to go on a road Trip through the far north, from  northern Quebec across Nunavut, NWT, Yukon then maybe into Alaska.  the wilderness look AMAZING from what I've seen in photos and magazines so i cant wait.

I'm hoping i can go with my dad this summer, but I'm not sure if ill be able to get time off work.
