In 1974 a study by Ivan Illich estimated that the average American male devotes more than 1,600 hours a year to his car to drive it, park it, wash it and earn the money to pay for it. He only drives 7,500 miles, which means he drives less than five miles per hour.

Have a look at this link from the Australian Bicycle Council:

With statistics like these, why don't more people ride bicycles to work? People would save money, and be both mentally & physically healthier as a result...

  1. I know for myself when I got a car I got lazy who wants to ride a bike in 80 degrees when you can drive and get there faster. And the other reason I live to far away from my job to ride a bike there and back maybe a motorcycle but not a bike.

  2. I can't/ Won't ride a bike to work. it takes me 20 min to drive the interstate to work. to ride a bike would take me an hour or so, backroads.

  3. Sadly, I am unable to ride my bicycle to and from work due to terrible roads and a city with a dangerous reputation.  So I either ride my motorcycle or drive my van.  I have been able to ride my bicycle to four previous jobs.  Nothing better.  Saved me a ton of money, helped me lose weight, and lower my blood pressure.  I hope when gas here is the US hits over $4.00 a gallon that motorist will see bicyclists as not merely a bother, but as someone using their bike as transportation.

BTW One year I lost 21 pounds riding 12 miles one way to work.  Would take me about 35 to 38 minutes to ride one way.  Only had one flat tire that summer.  I can change a flat tire in about 5 minutes.  I was never late to work.

  4. because you can sweat!  any cosmogirl would know!

  5. Where I live the drivers are so crazy that you take your life into your own hands on a bicycle.

  6. I hate bike riding personally. I always end up hurting myself.

  7. Around HERE, most people work too far from home to ride a bike. Also, riding in the street can get you killed by some impatient speeder who doesn't KNOW bikes are required to stay off the sidewalks.

  8. It sound like a really good idea and i am sure people are considering it but 30 miles is a long ways on a bicycle  one way.

  9. I would love to ride a bike, but sadly the city i live in makes it very hard. No bike lanes, crazy drivers, high winds, weird weather. I do when I can : (

  10. probably because a lot of people live too far away from where they work; it wouldn't be practical to use a bike in that situation
