Why don't my parents care about life?

They have sh*tty jobs (both restaurant work near minimum) and drink themselves to sleep everrryyyyyyynight. They are not together - I live with my mom and 2 little brothers and my dad lives with a crackhead! My mom gets pretty drunk in front of my younger brothers and is an angry drunk - she never abuses anyone though, shes just mean. I have learned to deal with it. But I just want to know why don't they care? They seem to have no motivation to stop drinking to go out and look for better jobs or a better place to live! They are both qualified enough to get better jobs but they reduce themselves to this? Its ruining my life and I don't want my brothers to be corrupted. I'm in college and just bought my own car, I do everything myself. It just doesn't seem fair though.

It's not that they don't care, its just that the problems of life and society itself has overwhelmed them. They've lost control and sight of what's important in life. This makes it seem like they don't care to you, but the reality is that this is what caring has driven them to because they can't cope with it. Trust me. I know because I had to deal with it with my mother. Some people just handle life differently.

It's unfortunate, but there really isn't mich you can do to change your parent's ways.  Kudos for doing something with your life.  By being successful, you inspire your little brothers as well.  Do what you can to show them that alcoholism isn't the way to go.  Keep being a prime example of how to live.
