Question:

Why don't people consider swimming a sport?

I bugs me so much when people argue that swimming isn't a sport. Swimming is THE BEST form of exercise your body can endure. It uses all of the muscles as well as challenging your mind. Competitive swimmers go through the same training that football players and boxers do (weight lifting, crunches, push ups, sprints, etc.), but swimmers get more in return. They become much more flexible, their endurance increases, there is less chance of injury, and the water cools them down while they sweat (I especially like this because I hate getting sweaty and sticky). Also, the different strokes can help someone target a specific part of the body while still using all of the other muscles too. If you want to specifically work your shoulders and legs , butterfly or backstroke are perfect for that. If you're looking to work on legs and arms, freestyle does that plus more. Breaststroke is great for working your butt, abs, and thighs (what most people want to do). I'm adding details so I can continue.

  1. i know right, it bothers me too, speaking of that i just got home from practice, i burned over 4000 calories, omg i am so tired

whats your favorite stroke? mine is butterfly, but backstroke is not my favorite, im the best butterflier on my team so i always get stuck with the longer races

  2. I know what you mean!!! Swimming is harder than most sports. People just don't get it :( beacause theirs no sweat (thats noticeable) and their just arn't many signs of how much your body endures until the muscles come in :-)

  3. I'm in swimming, track, and soccer and swimming is the hardest of the three. (although track is right behind it as far as how hard the sport is) Right now I'm in 7th grade going into 8th grade so I'm on the YMCA team and we have pretty tough practices, but not  anything compared to the highschool teams. My sister is in tenth grade going into 11th and is on the highschool team. The highschool practices are so hard and tiring she says. They have 2-a-days quiet often, and over christmas break the only days the swim team did not practice were on Christmas and New Years. Oh and the practices were definatly not easy. They swam 4-5 miles at least(although in running that is not a lot, for swimming it is) at 7 o' clock in the morning. Yeah I hate it when my friends act like basketball is the best sport and the hardest sport in the world and they think swimming is so easy. But it's so funny in gym when I beat everyone by a like a mile when we swim. Just remember "we swim cause we're too good looking for a SPORT that requires clothes" lol

  4. swimming is definitely a sport. People always think of swimming as playing in a pool with friends. They only say that cause they obviously never watch the Olympics or get out of the house. I have been swimming on a team for almost seven years year round. If someone thinks it isn't a sport take them to mostly any pool. Show them that it is a team of friends helping each other achieve goals and working hard.

    swimming IS a sport

  5. i think they dont think its a sport because they use it as a recreational activity

  6. i've never heard that before, ppl who dont consider it a sport are stupid and have obviously never done competitive swimming before. yes from what i've heard too is that swimming is the best form of exercise for you because it works every muscle, burns fat, and lenghtens your spine. anyone who says that should consider trying competitve swimming for 1 or 2 weeks, thats all, just try it 3 days a week for 1-2 weeks. then see what they think! or maybe when they say its not a sport they arent thinking of competitive swimming they might be thinking of just splashing around in a pool playing with pool noodles and beach balls

  7. i don't know, those people are fools. At my school, cheerleading is considered a sport. how dumb is that? they do no physical work at all and just stand there waving their dumb little pom pons

swimming takes so much from a person, mentaly and physically and i want everyone to know that. it takes work in and out of the pool to get you in shape

  8. I think that it's a sport. It does use a lot of your muscles and it helps you burn a lot of calories. Yahoo! seems to think that it is a sport, as they placed it under sports. Swimming is good for you and it helps to strengthen your muscles and heart.

  9. People who don't consider swimming a sport are morons. Swimming works your whole body and it works it well, you burn so many calories swimming. It's true that swimmers go through the some of the same kind of training football players do, but actually they do more because they do all the things you listed plus hours of time in the water. I'd like to see some who doesn't think swimming is a sport get in the water and do what competitive swimmers do, that would probably change their mind.

  10. people who dont say its a sport are stupid. anything that challenges your body is a sport. i personally think that swim is one of the best sports to stay fit and is defanitly a sport.

  11. It really bothers me as a guy when other guys think its not a sport so i just have them come swim me in a 400 ahah its great!
