Why don't people tip when they get a to go order?

I worked at an eat in resturant for 2 years mostly doing to go orders. There were nice people who would give a tip then there were those people who would order ove $200 worth of food and not tip at all. I think that to go orders are to be treated the same as if you sit in and eat. What do you think?

  1. I think it depends; If your a regular waitress and you have to fix a to-go while trying to keep up with your regular table, you should expect a tip; however, if you are paid regular wages (unlike waitstaff and bartenders) then you are packing the food and shouldn't expect it.

  2. Well...not really. The reason why is because as the server is serving they are giving you the food personally as if you are taking it to go you get the food and that's it. The cooks make the food and you get it.

  3. Nope, I'm paying top dollar for the food and there is no real service involved. What do you expect to get tipped for? How nicely you stacked containers in a bag? You

are paid a wage to do that. Ask to start waiting on tables if you want tips.

  4. As a server I know that its aggrivating.  However, I think that they think that they are not actually getting "served" or picked up after that they don't have to.

  5. Although I can see why people would have the opinion that there is no "real" service, I think some ppl don't realize what's involved.  I am a server at a high-end restaurant.  Nothing is more annoying than having to take a to-go order when I already have 4 or 5 other tables I'm serving.  Most of the calls I get involve the caller NOT having a copy of our menu...so just simply taking the call, providing them with food options, taking their order and estimating how long it will take IS service!  Then, you still have to take the time (away from your other customers) to order it and include any substitutes or modifications that need to print out for the cooks.  Then, you need to run and get everything the customer will need...plasticware, napkins, to-go containers, etc.  So, to answer the question:  Ignorance.  Simply put.

  6. Most of the places around where I live automatically had a tip into your order, so I'm not going to tip twice. You don't tip fast food restaurants and they do the same as if you were to go to Ruby Tuesday's and get a to go order, just the food is better.

  7. No, because you don't put in the same amount of work.  You don't have to cater to their every whim when they want more ice in their water or their fork is dirty, and you don't have to make sure you got their order right and bring it at the right time, etc.  Those To-go orders are there to make the restaurant extra money without using up space.

  8. I think so too.

I tip when I sit in, get it to go, or get it delivered.  I think that you are saying "Thanks for doing this for me, I appreciate it." when you tip.
