Question:

Why don't people who favor drug laws want tougher penalties for things that cause a lot more harm?

Heart disease and obesity are far more prevalent, so we might as well ban people from smoking or eating fast food. Far more people get messed up on alcohol and someone who drives drunk has the potential to kill several people at once, but the worst they'll get is a slap on the wrist compared to someone who is caught with possession of drugs. Even murderers and rapists often get off more easily. We also don't ban violent video games or punish people as severly for unlawfully possessing guns because of all the school shootings and other violence related to these things.

  1. They're comfortable with seeing those things because they see them in their everyday drug hating life.


  2.   I assume you speak of US law.  Here, drugs are a subject where logic and reason don't play a big part.  Our government has demonized drugs for about 80 years.  As for wanting tougher penalties for other crimes- most pro drug law folks do want tougher laws and sentences.
