Why don't plant roots rot?

The top of a tree gets infected with diseases very easily (like my apple tree), but why can roots live in conditions that would normally cause living things to die and decompose?

  1. Well, you're gonna get the same answer I tell my 5 year old grandson all the time:  "because that's the way God made them". /;~)
