  1. Nurses are not respected because of the stereotype that was set years ago.  Some people have yet to wake up and realize that the modern nurse is not around simply to cater to the doctor's ego.  Some people do not understand that nurses are ESSENTIAL in the care of the patient.  Some people think that nurses simply give shots and hand out medications and that the doctors do the rest.

Some people don't realize the scope of practice of a nurse.  People do not realize that long after the doctor has left, it is the nurse who is at the bedside making sure that the patient is stable and will make it through the day/night.

Sure, doctors are incredibly smart, but most of the time, the nurses do much more work than them.  A doctor goes to evaluate a patient and then orders things.  A nurse must then complete the orders and monitor the patient to make sure that they are ok.

  2. Most of the ppl thinks the doctor is the one who deserves all the congrats and respect for healing someone... but... in a surgery... the nurse is just soooooo required. And they do A LOT. Even if u see the best doctor to operate you... if the nurse is bad... that can make things HARD.

  3. Not sure where you are coming from. I have always felt respected, it was never an issue. Consider the source -- you have to allow yourself to be disrespected. There are many people who have not had experience with RNs, and have a variety of biases and prejudices. I can't worry about them. As to who does the most work -- I'd say it's a wash between doctors and nurses. And, BTW -- you have to earn respect. It isn't automatic.
