Question:

Why don't some states give back for recycling bottles and cans?

I lived in Maine my whole life till 3 years ago when I moved to Florida. In Maine we would get 5 cents back for every glass bottle, plastic container and soda can. Everyone I knew recycled just so they could get some kind of money back. But here in Florida, it seems the only people that recycle are the people trying to 'live green'. So why doesn't every state in the US do this? It doesn't make sense to me, wouldn't more people consider recycling if they knew they could get something like money back in return? What are your thoughts and help me understand why the whole US isn't doing this?

  1. You pay that fee when you buy the product, some people just don't care about the extra few cents, I think the states think people will be more encouraged to recycle if they put a recycling fee on it.

  2. they don't want bums to benefit from it

  3. It's a political thing.  Having a recycle program ultimately helps save the environment but ends up costing the manufacturers who use cans/bottles/glass to label their products as such...then ad in the costs to run the recycle program...you can see how the manufacturer lobbyists lobby against such action.

  4. So, you want to be paid for recycling?  I thought you wanted to "save the planet."    Guess I misunderstood.

  5. Because they place human concerns over pseudo environmental issues

  6. because they don't charge an extra tax when you buy the beverages.

  7. "...environmental benefits of recycling do not compensate for the extra effort it may require/Government mandated recycling is more expensive than putting the garbage into landfills, which means that this recycling uses up more resources than it saves."

I'm not sure if that's their reason for not encouraging ppl to recycle, but that's something you should ask you Mayor..

  8. i thought that only canada did that

  9. there is no such thing as recycling. They all go to the same place and paper, plastic, and metal get sorted out by a machine. Thats why people stop recycling.
