  1. That's not what they are into.  These companies are into drilling for oil.

Electric corporations would be into nuclear.  They are looking to build new reactors, however the environmentalist are making this difficult.

  2. It is not a business they have chosen to get into, probably because they do not see any significant profit potential.

  3. The oil companies would find themselves facing competitors with decades of experience in a field where they'd be novices.

The oil companies could buy that expertise, if any of the current owners were willing to sell (the nuclear division of Westinghouse is, IIRC, currently owned by Toshiba), but it would put them in a business very different from the one they're used to and they would find it very difficult to manage even if it was profitable.

  4. They make more $$$ by selling us gasoline! And THAT is what its all about, NOT doing what's right!

  5. There are $361 Billion reasons explained here:

Exxon-Mobil is making an incredible amount of money with huge profit margins doing exactly what they're doing. There's no incentive for them to get into a totally different energy field (one not nearly as lucrative). There's also no eagerness on their part for the US to seriously address global warming.
