Question:

Why don't the Red Sox pick up Manny's option for next year now?

This seems like a no brainer to me, they have 2 options left and they can go through this trumped up media zoo next season... they already did an MRI on both knees, they know he's healthy. So what if his agent is Scott Boras, most good player's agnet is Scott Boras.

Who is gonna protect Ortiz? Who is gonna be better? Its left field in Fenway park. There isn't a better left fielder.

  1. They are tired of keeping Manny

  2. Simple reason. Its optional and the sox choose not to have him anymore.

  3. because they don't want him anymore and they are tired of his stupid antics

  4. I agree Manny has been such a big part of the Red Sox and the Sox success in the last 4 years with the 2 world series rings but everyone in Boston is getting tired of Manny being Manny with his attitude and the way he plays the game. The Fans are tired of him the front office is tired with him the coaches and now the players are tied of him.  Dont get me wrong the Red Sox would not be the seem team without him in the lineup but it is very clear that Manny plays for the name on the back of the jersey and not the one on front of the jersey and that will not fly in Boston.

My Guess is he will not be in a Red Sox Uniform next year

  6. If you've been paying attention recently, Manny has been getting into a lot of fiascos lately and the Red Sox have started to look at trading him.  Manny has even said that he wouldn't mind being traded.  There is absolutely no way that the Sox would pick up his option now because both sides aren't together right now.

  7. i just think hes to much of a distraction for the red sox but dont get me wrong that guy can definetly hit but hes just to lazy in the outfield

  8. Manny Ramirez is declining in production but his (Manny being Manny) has started to pick up. It's obvious the front office is tired with the antics. (Did you see how quick those MRI results were released (And on both knees) to show that Ramirez was not being honest with the organization. Now Manny is desiring a trade it's obvious that the Red Sox are waiting to see how the 2nd half plays out before considering the option but it seems highly unlikely. Ramirez quoted, I'm tired of the Red Sox and I know their tired of me. In so many words its obvious that 20 million is way too much for an aging declining yet still huge distraction.

BTW They did the MRI to humiliate Ramirez in the public's eye. He lived up to the contract that's for sure two world series and what a great career. Whose been better for their money A-Rod or Ramirez (Ramirez in a heart beat). If Ramirez starts hitting even better than now and producing more and having less distractions the Red Sox might consider offering him the option. Manny shouldn't have had back to back team options in his contract it's like having to be in a contract year for so many seasons a lot of pressure on a player.

Salty (Red Sox Fan?) Manny took a game off against the Yankees (he's done that before) It's apparent nothing was wrong with the knees and the Red Sox are in a tight race for the division. Why against the Yankees?

  9. i think they are gonna wait til August 1st, after the trade deadline, to see if they get an astronomical offer from some other team to take manny

i mean, im sure there are teams that will want to take manny in exchange for some proven talent and good prospects, and the red sox front office probably knows that

if he turns out to be worth his weight in gold this week, then some other team can give him a contract extension..if he doesn't get moved, then they will most likely pick up his option, rather than let him go to FA

  10. They wont pick up his option b/cc he is not worth even close to the 20 mil the option is for.  He is a great left fielder, has great numbers, and seems to be able to get away with the most c**p in baseball in boston.  He will not get traded this season b/c no one will want to pay him what he will be earning.  I dont know how you can say he is a good left fielder.  In the last 10 years, the three worst plays i have ever seen came from him.  When he dove to  cut off the  ball 10 feet from the center fielder. then continued to make it a 3 man cut-off(classic) or how about a few weeks ago when he is rolling around on the ground and the ball is underneath him??  He has made a few good plays, but hey, even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while.

Manny deserves to be a DH

  11. I agree with most of what you said, but I do have to argue the best left feilder comment. He plays the WALL REALLY well, but anyone with 5 years experience could do the same. Maybe better so (since he won't run for anything and most players would). Other players also would do a summer sault for a ground ball and turn a standard pop-out into a triple.

BUt the answer, IMO, is because they can't or it would encourage all players to cry and complain until they get what they want.

My guess is they will pick up the contract this fall, and Boras will bump it from 20 mil to 25 or whatever, and they'll pay it (after a long negotiation). But they can't just give him what he wants when there are young players on the team watching attentively while the goof ball cries and complains and gets his way.

  12. the sox have a rule that they won't negotiate contracts during the season.

  13. He is a club house cancer, the Sox have the money to buy a hitter who will play hard and perform at a professional level. Why keep a guy that is unhappy with you. The only reason they would pick up the option is to trade for him.

  14. The Red Sox have been great at evaluating talent at the end of contract years. They are willing to let popular players walk away if they feel they are not worth what they are asking (except Schilling). They let Damon and Millar walk away as well as Pedro, and that was the right decision.

Right now, the front office does not like Manny and it will take a lot to convince them that on-field talent > off-field actions (which i think it is). Don't forget the $20 mill/year price tag as well. Thats not cheap for someone who is on the downturn of a (great) career.

I think they plan on JD Drew finally coming around to be someone to protect Ortiz next season. At least that is what they planned on last year when they signed him for 5 years/$70 Mill
