  1. Because it is more fun to lie to the citizens to get them to join and then s***w the intelligent, free-willed ones over; then send them packing for failing to conform.

  2. Because volunteers fight harder than conscripts, and there is no need for a draft right now.

  3. The volunteer system is one of the best parts of the US Military...it ensures that only people that WANT to fight for their country are doing so

  4. as israel found out 2 years ago a volunteer army is the only way to go.

  5. One reason is because if you have a force structure as large as the US, you could either pay a smaller group of skilled individuals more, or you could pay a larger group of less-skilled people less.  You would need to determine which is more effective.  As mentioned above, we just don't have a need for it presently.  Notwithstanding a supportive culture, a smaller country without the global responsibilities, force size, and interests of the US might have a need to conscript people.

  6. The actual WHY, is because post-Vietnam, Congress and the US population hasn't been ready to reinstate a draft or required service.  ALSO, the constant reduction in military budget forces a smaller and smaller military.

Required service isn't necessarily a sign of "advanced nation" status... though I will grant that Switzerland and Israel would count.

CURRENTLY the US Military conducts operations that are NOT conducive to a drafted military.

  7. Because they don't need to. If the US military had a hard time recruiting volunteers then the government could possibly decide to do compulsory military service - but since they don't have a problem recruiting why bother?

  8. i think that they should.

  9. Because volunteers make better weapons.
