They cannot close it until they know what they are going to do with the prisoners at it right now. Despite what the media says the people down in Gitmo are hardcore AQ and Taliban, not innocent folks who got swept up. Once they either construct a new Super Max Prison or put them into a current Super Max Fed Pen or something along those lines then you will see it close.

Serious, do you want them storing terrorists, criminals and what not next door to you because that is what was going to happen. Several prominent democrats who proposed closing it down had to shut their mouths because they were going to move them to their own state, which would not have looked good come election time.

with GW in the white house and then if we choose Mccain in November there is no way we'd close Guantanamo Bay.  It is just too convenient to lock up people and have no trials even if they are innocent.  I think the world will change in many positive ways if we elect Obama.  Maybe by the end of his second term there might be international peace wouldn't that be beautiful!

OK....What do they do with the people incarcerated there?  Some of these people are very nasty individuals.  Not all of them of course.  Military trying to sort out the bad, bad eggs.

Ok... back to the original comment.  We can't send them back to their country of origin, because that country will not take them.  We can't really incarcerate them in the Federal Prison System because they are being detained under a different set of rules.  Rules that have been OK'ed by SCOTUS.

I personally believe the Administration wants to close it up, but they are kind of stuck.
