because there are more reasons to take off a necklace than a ring. necklaces can also get caught on stuff, and are more easily stolen.

Because a necklace has a clasp so it can be removed. The ring is ONE continuous circle to represent the never ending love and commitment to each other.

Men don't really wear jewlery, but a ring would look better on the man then a necklace!

Tradition. Necklaces are more often worn by women so an exchange isn't as great, and also are more showy. Really, would you want your wedding (necklace/band) to be a piece of jewelery? You'd feel obligated to take it off even around the house, forget at work.
