Actually, England was a republic from 1649 to 1660.  Parliament chose Oliver Cromwell as Lord Protector upon the execution of Charles I.  Cromwell held the highest political office in England during what is known as the Interregnum (literally "between the reigns"), although since he ruled through military might, a more appropriate title might be "dictator".  Shortly after Cromwell's death, the English Parliament called back Charles I's son, Charles II,  from exile.

We did, we reinstated the monarchy. However, just because we're a Kingdom as sopposed to a republic does not mean we live in an undemocratic country, there are free democratic elections for all levels of Government. The Queen is a figurehead, no more.

I believe we did need to slim down the Royal family - royal titles only for the Monarch and his/her children, anyone else below that is a commoner or at least does not have the tite HRH - like the Earl of Wessex's daughter is a Lady because of her father's title, but her children will be commoner's unless she maries someone who holds a herditary title.

The United States is a republic.  A republic is defined as a nation in which the people, the citizens, select the leaders who will govern the country.  The power is in the hands of the voters who choose the leaders.  The United States is a democratic republic; the majority rules both in choosing the leaders and in passing laws.

No thanks,we all saw what happened in the u.s.a when a hedge lied his way into office and a semi articulate,lying r****d is now the leader of the worlds most powerful nation.That in itself,is more than enough to make countries that did become democratic republics revert back to the monarchical system.
