Why don't we hear as much about volleyball as alot of other sports?

I think you don't hear as much because it's not as popular or big as other sports. For example Soccer is a really big sport and is watched all over the world. Volleyball I think is just less popular.

volleyball takes as much skill as the other sports. you have to have control of the ball, quick on your feet and a lot of other stuff. im not sure. like the other person said b/c there are no major teams

Probably because there are no professional leauges. We only hear about it when the Olympics are around.

well one of the reasons is that Volleball, a popular sport among Beep kids, is not a sport that requires the contact, thus making it a unique sport,

and the most common reason that people swear in other sports such as football, basketball, hockey is that the mistakes that happens when someone trys to take a way the puch, the basketball or even intercept the football,

they might of hit eachother, bumped into eachother

the main point is, volleyball doesn't require physical contact as all the other popular sports

It's funny that everyone here says that volleyball isn't popular.  It's actually quite opposite.  Volleyball just doesn't happen to be popular as a spectator sport.  Most people who have interest are out there playing.

In the northeast, there is NERVA which hosts tournaments at multiple sites every weekend where 100's of people play in organized tournaments.  This is in addition to the countless leagues that are indivually run.  Do you see people actually playing football or baseball that much outside of college?  Once the summer hits, doubles tournaments are set up and similar counts of people play that.

With respect to popularity, I believe volleyball to be much more popular in European countries and in Brazil.  This may be why their teams dominate the US when it comes to international play.  For some great volleyball videos, look up Dante on youtube.

As far as no professional leagues in the US, what is the AVP?  They are expanding coverage with their summer tours televised as well as their Hot Summer Nights tour which is going on this winter.

It's pretty simple really. when compared to the other major sports in the U.S. Volleyball just doesn't have the mainstream popularity. Look at Soccer for example... it's the world's most popular sport and it just hasn't gotten mainstream attention in the U.S., we like the OTHER football, followed by Baseball, and Basketball. There is nothing wrong with Volleyball, it just doesn't garner the same interest and therefore generate the same type of mony for the atheletes, sponsors, or promoters.

Because people think of it as a women's sport and there are no professional leagues in the US.  (I know it is not just a women's sport.  I used to play.  It is just what many people think.)  

Most women's sports do not get the coverage of the men's sports.  Look at sports where they both have leagues and competitions.  Basketball, golf and soccer come to mind.  Baseball vs softball as well.  Again, I am not saying it is right.  That is the way it is.  

Volleyball is getting more coverage and more TV exposure after the last Olympics.  There was coverage of the World Cup in Japan on an HD TV station this past year.  They showed it on a tape delay basis, but they showed every match.

It's just not as popular, and a LOT of people think it's just a girly sport, and they think it's easier than it really is.

But, at my last tournament i heard one of the executives saying that girls volleyball is getting really popular, and its the new soccer. (but soccer will always be popular)
