Why don't we use the methane powered car approach?

Because in the US the oil companies have leashes attached to the politicians collars.

A methane powered car sounds like a great idea but, the oil companies will oppose it since, they cant make money off it.

Same thing for solar energy, the electric companies don't want solar power since, they can't charge you for how much solar energy you use.
