Question:

Why don't we use these words anymore?

I use shan't, but no one else seems to use it, and I use "I shall see you tomorrow" (Look it up, it's correct. You use shall when you intend to do something)

Except the older people, no one in England says it anymore, but I don't know why, because they use "won't" incorrectly, and excessively.

  1. Because most people are too lazy to take the time to use proper grammar. Nowadays "will" is used for "shall."

  2. Alas, I have no idea why.

  3. I think it's because it's old English and in some of the newer English textbooks they teach it with will instead of shall.

  4. We've got lazy. And the new gerations have come up with so much new slang, it just works/

  5. Me and my friends use it jokingly. Plus, some words get old and new ones come along...just get over it.

  6. i use those words alot

  7. Actually i'm from England, and i say shan't :]

However, to answer your question - times have changed, people are taught things differently now that is probably the reason.

  8. I use shall a lot of the time.

Never shan't, though. I know it's a little grammatically incorrect to use the word won't in place of it, but shan't always sounds awkward and a little anachronous to use in fluent conversation.

But that's just my opinion, anyway.

    :]

  9. I know that I say it however it make people sound nerdy I guess

  10. people are to use to using the slang version of words now a days!

  11. Depends on what part of the country you are in.  People have different slang in different parts of the USA.  As long as we understand each other and can communicate I guess it is okay.

  12. how is using "won't" incorrect?

    it means will not.

    "i won't eat that"

    "i will not eat that"

    same thing.

i don't know why people don't use shan't though, but it's the same as won't, just abbreviated from "shall not"

  13. I use shall, except I don't live in England.

    But I'm a teenager--

  14. thy question is good... because those words are forsooth archaic...

  15. Some people refrain from using "shall" and "shan't" because, even though the words are perfectly correct, to some they sound pretentious. Same with "dassn't", although I believe that's a chiefly North American contraction of "dare not".

But keep it up, you are completely correct in your usage.

  16. The English language evolves all the time, things get extinct, things get born.

  17. 'Shall' almost seems passive if you ask me.

Whereas 'will' seems more aggressive, or more of a statement.

    Just my opinion.  Great question.

  18. God , i had this conversation with my 10 year old daughter the other day. I had said something like, I shan't be home until later, and to my surprise, she said, Is shan't really a word Mum? I couldn't believe that she had never heard it before, but the more i thought about it, i realised I couldn't recall having heard anyone else use the word for a long time! I live in Scotland by the way, and i am 28

  19. i say shall and tis but usually just for laughs.. =]

  20. i still use those words and phrases :)
