Why dont I recieve my emails the same day I always recieve them the next day?

My boyfriend will call me up and be like did you get my email I sent you last night and I told him I checked it the next morning and it wasnt there but that afternoon it was there.

could just be the volume that yahoo has to process every day...sometimes its like that

Being an IT professional, I can tell you hundreds of different reasons why this is occuring.  Since your emails are traversing the internet, with its vast networks of routers, servers, switches, and telecomunnication lines, it is not as simple as two paper cups and a string.  A lot of times, the ISP of the sending party is the culprit as they have to scan the sender's email for viruses, process it through their email servers, deliver it to the receiving party, wait for an acknowledgement, and such.  Also, certain spam blockers can incorrectly quarantine the email, preventing timely delivery.  There are so many reasons why this happens, but 99% of the time, it is the sender's ISP and their servers that are either bogged down or down for maintenance at stupid times of the day.  I have seen this myself with my ISP and would call to yell at them for doing this at normal business hours.
