  1. this question has been asked countless times.

    the main reasons are:

    cost

    weight

    time to construct

    efficiency

and also, the material used to make the black box (which is orange by the way) is NOT indestructible. It is designed to absorb all impact and PRESERVE what is inside. This means it can be pulverized but as long as whats inside is relatively intact, it has done its job.

For it to be effective, there are many layers, much too many for the body of an airplane. Also, the black box itself is usually horrendously damaged and the recording material inside is rarely completely in one piece.

if the crash is very straightforward. Ie: nose first into the ground or crash into wall at high speed. No material will protect the occupants. This is because commercial airliners have the seats facing the front. If it were facing the back like all military transports, fatalities will be much lower.

If the impact is rather indirect, such as a landing gear collapse during landing and airplane fuselage slides the length of the runway, aluminum and graphite-glass-epoxy composite are enough to deaden the impact. The main issue with an impact like that is the possibility of a fire.

  2. WAY TOO HEAVY!!!

    AND ITS TOO EXPENSIVE TOO!

or else its great, I dont think its worth the money tho =D

  3. Why not build a car that is as strong as a tank?  I wonder how many times a day this question is asked?  Hmmmm....

  4. itd be too heavy to fly

  5. becasue this question is asked every day..

  6. cos the impact of a crash would kill you anyway..we learnt that lesson a long time ago in the automobile industry

  7. because the black box is designed to protect machinery, not human beings.  As an experiment, get into an airtight metal box  and seal yourself in. Let us know how it works out.

  8. blackboxes are not fully indestructible... I've seen pictures of recovered blackboxes from aircraft crashes, and it seems that the blackbox itself is badly damaged, so if the plane itself were made of blackbox material, it would still prove to be useless.. + too much weight, and you'll die anyway when the plane crashes at high speed.

  9. Why isn't your skull made of cast iron?

  10. It would weigh too much. And even if you could get it off the ground, it would cost alot to make it and alot to fly it.

But it sure is a nice thought. ;)

  11. planes fly because they are made of lightweight material... if they were made completely out of the material that "black boxes" are made out of, they would be way to heavy and would not be able to get in the air.
