  1. Last time I checked - more than one race does that... Its not color specific...

  2. Well, I'm not sure if this helps answer your question, but as far as sales of the typical "bling bling, booty call, misogynist" rap CDs that are sold in the U.S., you do know the major demographic that buys them are white, teenage to young 20s males, right?

  3. i dont know why, but im guessing that its because they feel angry about the slavery thing and the want to get revenge on white people.

  4. this is probably a completly unanswerable question in anything approaching a coherent fashion. Firstly, you have a bit of a bias in the question, but you may not have realized it. Secondly, when you talk about things like social reproduction or cultural reproduction, it is difficult to talk about the issues in an abstract fashion and relate it back to the people in question. After all you dont want to remove people of their agency, but you also cant argue its simply something they choose because there is something wrong with them. Thirdly, since it is so difficult to know these things for certain, who is to say that the people you discuss are not simply seeing a structure that is still unequal toward them and they have choosen to express their mixed sentiments towards it in this fashion?

To make a long story shorter, its probably too difficult to say in this medium, why a group of people chooses to adopt certain social norms in a given time period without making some rather bold assumptions.

  5. It all comes down to money, being a thug is glamorous and pays well ... and does not requires one to learn legitimate,  marketable skills.

Plus it's always easier to whine and complain, rather than actually putting effort into fixing one's life.

  6. Woooah.  This is a heavily-prejudicial question.  Why lump all black people together and form this assumption?  It simply isn't true.

Many black individuals form their own personalities and lifestyles and live free of the stereotype that you've described.  We see a lot of the thug-lifestyle exaggeratedly portrayed in the media because the music and clothing sell.  The people who purchase this material (white people included, I know I listen to Shade 45 on Sirius radio!) are the ones who controll the market.  If we didn't put "thug" paraphernalia in demand, they would have no reason to promote and supply it to us.  The general public has created this stereotype.

Unfortunately, the negative outcome with the kids occurs when the kids fail to recognize the difference between the market they see on TV and how people should act in real life.  Again, blame the producers and consumers for this, not all black people in general.

Kymberly, I applaud your attempt at being Politically Correct.  However, African-American only refers to the members of the black community within America.  They do not call black individuals "African-American" in Africa, the UK, Canada..so on and so forth.  It is only in America.  To respectfully use the term "black" to be able to include ALL members of the black race internationally is perfectly acceptable.

  7. The thug life style may be all some people know when there are no positive things around.

  8. Well, that was very racist. First, African American is the politicaly correct term. I personally have never seen a person with skin the color of black. And it is not just African Americans. Their are many minorities and many non-minorities promoting the "thug" life. It is their choice life style. I may not agree with it, but in some places it really is dog eat dog and they have just evolved to thrive in that enviroment. So before you go and profile anymore ethnic groups, you may want to stop and think about what made them become that way.
