Are you having problems with the english language here?

Some people do keep horses in a field together and when you can it is beneficial for them as it nurtures their herd instinct.

Unfortunately most horses are now domesticated and have lost certain aspects of that herd instinct - ergo if you put them in a field together they will fight.

It is best to separate mares and geldings too for obvious reasons for whilst the geldings might be firing blanks the instinct to do what it is they have to do is still there.

Some horses are bloody expensive too - so you dont want to risk injury by putting them in a field with a load of others - epsecially if it is a competition horse.

Horses...I think you mean horses. They keep them together for company.
