What does that have to do with anything...do you think they get more energy as a result of being closer?

because they are connected to a grid not the power plant. the power plant may be sending its power miles and miles away before it goes into a substation to reduce the voltage down to power up the grid. the only way to get cheaper power bills use less energy.
