  1. RBC dont have nucleus so tat they can hold and carry more oxygen in them ...the surface area for carrying oxygen increases due to lack of nucleus and thus haemoglobin present can absorb more oxygen for transportation

  2. I agree with everyone's answers...but there's a point to be noted.

RBCs do have nucleus when there young. As they mature they lose their nucleus for the purpose of carrying more oxygen in the cells.

  3. Remember the human red blood cells doen't always lack a nucleus. Up until the final steps of red blood cell maturation, they do have one.

In order to squeeze through these small blood capillaries, RBC which are about 10 micron in diameter, must be very flexible. The presence of a nucleus would prevent big nucleated RBC to squeeze through these small capillaries. Therefore, during the evolutionary development, nature has found that it was better to get rid of the nucleus and also other cell organelles (e.g., endoplasmic reticulum for protein synthesis) which were not needed for their actual function as oxygen carrier.

The reason that human mature red blood cells lack a nucleus appears to be so that the red blood cell has room for more hemoglobin and therefore can carry more oxygen per cell.

  4. Erythrocytes in mammals are anucleate when mature, meaning that they lack a cell nucleus and as a result, have no DNA. Red blood cells have nuclei during early phases of development, but extrude them as they mature in order to provide more space for hemoglobin. In comparison, the erythrocytes of nearly all other vertebrates have nuclei; the only known exception being salamanders of the Batrachoseps genus.

  5. to make space for maximise intake of oxygen.....imagine a bus without seats...even if only standing room available...still more people can fill up the bus.....

  6. for space purpose

  7. RBCs are highly differentiated with little to seek help from the nucleus by way of survival. On the other hand they are packed with hemoglobin molecules which need space in the cytoplasm provided by the absence of nucleus.

  8. To store maximum oxygen and organic material more space is requried.
