  1. uhh...at my school reading and english ARE the same thing...except in high school everyone just calls it English and in elementary everyone called it Reading..but i go to a small high school so we wouldnt have enough teachers or students for seperate reading and english classes anyways

  2. We go a few steps beyond that in our homeschool.  We combine English composition with science and history.  We combine grammar and spelling  with English composition.   We consider it reading when we study Science or History because we learn new words and understanding what is read is being educated.  We connect subjects in anyway that they naturally connect.

One of the main complaints that we had in elementary grade public education was the lack of concern over correct punctuation, spelling and grammar.    It is very nice that children learn to express themselves in writing, but bad habits are hard to break.    It would be nice if they could learn to express themselves and use correct language mechanics.

So, in answer to your question:  I vote that they do combine all the subjects and give a well rounded, complete education.

  3. When I was little (I was homeschooled) we had English for learning how to write and reading for working on well, reading.  When we grew older history, english, reading all kinda got mushed together.  I can see why you would have separate classes for them though.  You could have a literature class where you read and then have discussions and no writing.  And you could have an english class with all writing and no reading.  But it just makes sense to me to lump them together.

  4. Where I live, we don't have separate reading courses--there's just English class. I have to agree--I don't really see the point of separate classes, unless the Reading class is designed to provide more reading time and assistance to those who are struggling.

  5. Some do combine them and others don't.  Logically they can be combined, but some schools choose not to for a variety of reasons.

At some schools, reading classes are geared to students who need additional help with reading, who need more than one English class can provide.

Some schools realize that English classes are supposed to teach sooo much--reading, writing, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, speech--that it is hard to do it properly in just one class period; so they will break it up into two different classes with two different names.   (Some schools will instead make English a class that is twice the time of all the other classes, but that can be a scheduling nightmare.)

At some schools, they do it to allow for different emphases.  The English classes can go over different aspects of literature than the reading classes that focus more on the fundamentals of reading.  These schools will offer both classes because they want to be sure that all of their students do well in reading, since it is such a fundamental skill.
