  1. Because 'home economics' got faded out as 'not cool'.

Also the role of the Women and her expectations has changed in society, she isn;'t th ehome maker anymore but th ebreadwinner/income earner too. I think Men should get more invovled with making meals.

Also in the UK we are adopting this i want to eat now culture and go out for the ready meal or take out option..

People feel too rushed and oblidged to prepare and cook a meal, Sometimes its also down to 'modern day excuse making also 'i'm rushed, i've got to go out', 'Icany'

People can make the time to learn a recipe and experimnent. being able to cook for yourself and others is such fun and very rewarding.   Its the perception that its tough to do when it isn't.  Have a cook in with your friends or learn from somebody you know to be a good cook... :)

  2. well dont know were you are but here in america its all about serving it fast we dont want to wait lol thats why

  3. I'm not sure, probably because sports seems to be the highest priority in the schools.

  4. I had a home economics class in school.  They taught me how to make cookies from scratch and how to make my own gym bag.  That's about it.  I don't remember meeting for class all that much though.  Probably ran opposite of gym class or something.  I'm guessing the reason why we aren't taught proper cooking in school anymore is because there is SO MUCH to teach.  Science... English... math... foreign language.

  5. Because at the end of the day there arent many jobs in which cooking or 'home economics' will get you very far.

What they do teach nowadays is 'Food techonology' This is more to do with the business side than the cooking side of food. Food tech would look better on a CV basically.

  6. everyone would rather have bad food than to wait to have good food trust me my step dad is a cook it takes him forever to make kiesh  (its a breakfast pie )

  7. Can you imagine having 24 children of mixed ability, 12 ovens (2 of which don't work) 1 teacher, hopefully 1 classroom assistant and a1 hour lesson?

To get the children in the classroom, aprons on, hands washed, hair tied back, recipes found, ingredients out, equipment out, forgotten food supplied, and the non-cookers settled takes roughly 20 mins.

Then, ovens on, help opening packets, check some weights, rescue or restart recipe, clear up spillages, help grease and  put in trays, put in ovens.

Next, wash up, put away, clean tables, remove food from ovens, put in storage containers, clean floor, give homework.

Lastly, be ready for next class to do it all again with.

I was that teacher and there is no-way you can teach anybody anything apart from the basic easy food.

  8. Why would I watch that? I don't loathe myself enough to.

  9. I know, all we learnt in school was theory, and how to cook for diabetics or old people (though I'm sure old people can eat just the same as us, if anything what we learnt was really really rude and patronising!).  My mum taught me how to cook, and cook books.  I can't believe some people cannot do the simplest cooking.  I guess it must be the health and safety issue, a lot of kids can't be trusted around sharp utensils and hot equipment!  Its a shame.

  10. My guess would be that too cook properly takes too much time these days.

  11. my old school in the Uk apparently still does home economics, so it hasn't gone from everywhere.

There was something on the BBC website the other day saying that they were going to bring back cooking lessons to all schools to try and combat obesity.  Many of the kids parents wouldn't know how to throw together a salad if someone chucked the ingredients at them, so they're going to try and teach the kids instead.

One lesson a week of cooking doesn't teach you much, although some of these kids wouldn't know how to crack an egg into a bowl, so if having a year or so of cooking classes at school gives you the confidence to try and make scrambled egg or sausage and bean casserole, then that's got to be a start and they'd probably also teach kids how to weigh out ingredients and follow a recipe, so I guess they're giving them the basics and teaching them not to be scared of trying something new.

So cooking in schools - a good thing.

  12. Heat it, eat it, sh#t it, what's more proper than what that is?

  13. what exactly is "proper" cooking?

what you want is to reignite the 40's.  I have no desire to ever make my child ever go through home ec again.  It was such a shot back into the death knolls of female oppression.

I never wanted to be Martha Stewart.  Why should cooking be taught in a school?  School is for academics, don't believe me, then begin an investigation as to why arts programs in publically funded schools have been cut significantly and can never have a budget.

Wanna' teach people how to cook, then open up your own school in specialty arts and make cooking the main subject.  Maybe people will learn how to create a rue from scratch or learn how to make a suffle' and mousse.  Other than those few exceptions, all cooking can be self taught to yourself if you only want to learn.

Home Economics was forced on me in my High School and was a clearly defined dedicated class for girls.  Why should only the girls be educated in cooking and such when there are so many other social woes in society that need to be taught.

  14. Teachers are too busy with, filling in forms.Avoiding violent attacks.Carrying all the "down to education" demands.

  15. Thats a great idea,

I did this at school but everything got burned or the recipies were horrible, like kidney and liver pie, threw most of it away..It was called "home economics " class.  Thers nothing wrong with learning to cook, some of the boys chose to do it too if only to avoid other subjects.....they should bring it back!Jaime Oliver should ve thought of it..........
