  1. Because it's the worst color for an aircraft. It's more difficult to see it.

  2. making them painted black would make them very hot in the sunshine as black colour absorbs maximum heat

  3. then they'll be almost invisible at night then other planes might not see it and collide with it

  4. Worst color for an airplane. Larry Flynt of Hustler fame painted his Gulfstream II black and soon wished he hadn't. Fuel expansion on a hot day meant that he had to leave an hours worth of jet A in the truck.

  5. USAir used to have black and red.  They were ugly.

  6. Because most people who can afford a plane are the old rich types that dont have that kind of style.

Thats the real reason. There are very few types of people who would buy a plane that also want it black.

You see a few cheap aircraft like cessna 172's and piper cherokees painted black, but nothing really expensive.

  7. because then no one else would be able to see them, might cause some accidents

  8. Does anyone remember Hugh Hefner's private plane (DC9?) that was all black with a white Playboy bunny painted on the tail?

  9. I knew a guy who painted his Cessna black.  After riding in it once, we all referred to it as "The Flying Heat Sink".

    It was miserable.

  10. True Story:  Grumman American made a light twin called the cougar GA-7. One in our area was painted all black.   I was flying in a valley with the sun behind me one day and I saw a spec of black in the windshield.  I thought it was a bug until I realized it was moving.  Dove to get out of the way!

Two weeks later, flying in the same area, glanced up and saw the same black spec.  I dove again only this time realized that this time it was a bug that went splat on the windscreen!

  11. r u serious??? becuz dark colors dont absorb sunlight so it would be like h**l in tat plane. =)

  12. Because pilots get tired of being asked "What did you fly through?"

  13. That depends on what you need.To be Stealthy,Wicked or flashy or practical.

  14. As far as commercial airliners go, it is a marketing decision as to what a company's aircraft should look like. Some aircraft have been painted black, like Playboy's DC-9. It was solid black with a white bunny on the tail. I don't know whether they still have it or not.

The SR-71 (Blackbird) was painted black, and so are the F-117 and the B-2. These are all Air Force aircraft, and they operate at night when they are most difficult to see.

Oddly enough, a black aircraft, in daylight, stands out more than one that is painted in any other color, because there is the maximum contrast with the sky. This is why the F-15 is painted "sky blue" in order to blend in with the sky. They are very difficult to pick out.

The Predator, the reconnaissance drone, is actually lighted underneath, as this makes it disappear to the human eye!

Why an aircraft is painted is up to its owner and its mission, just like cars and trucks.

    Regards,

    Dan
