Question:

Why dose a bankruptcy matter to employers?

I just had a interview that went fine until the background came up. The committee wanted to know why I filed a bankruptcy, and what was filed in the bankruptcy. Dose that totally discredit my ability to do a job? The job interview was for a police dispatcher position. Any useful info would be nice.

  1. it really is none of any of their business.  bankruptcy has no correlation to the ability to perform one's job.  tell them it's family, personal and confidential business, and that you don't wish to share intimate family issues with third parties.  but if you have to, just tell them you co-signed a loan for a relative and they defaulted and you couldn't pay back the loan for them.

  2. Just another way for them to discriminate, just like insurance company's now do.

by the way all government jobs check for bankruptcies.
