Why during a high (or platform) dive is there someone or something splashing on the surface of the pool?

You've seen it in the Olympics, where they use a fountain or spigot, but at a high dive show at a theme park, for example, the other divers will splash on the surface of the pool for the "featured" dive. What does that do?

  1. It helps the diver to see the water better.


  2. When a dive takes place the diver is falling a fair height the surface of the the pool is like hitting something solid therefore the surface is broken up in an accepted way to prevent this happening  twice people who have jumped of the Westgate Bridge here in Australia have lived because the sea water was in a wavy condition and they fell from an enormous height.~~

  3. This is so the diver can have some depth perception as to where the water is.
